Crazy 8 Outrigger Canoe Race

The Crazy 8 is a 13km, figure eight, six-person outrigger canoe race that starts at the Brechin Boat Launch and loops around Newcastle and Protection Islands. Outrigger teams from the lower mainland and across Vancouver Island come to Nanaimo every year to compete in this challenging outrigger race that takes teams an average of 70 minutes to complete. Race categories include youth/novice, women’s, men’s and mixed (open, masters and senior masters).

Newcastle-Protection Islands (NPI) Attack Small Boat Race

The following day, NCKC hosts the Newcastle Protection Islands (NPI) Attack: a 11 km, small boat loop race around Newcastle and Protection Islands for individuals and teams of up to four people. NPI Participants can race in single, double or four-person outrigger canoes; single or double surfskis. Official categories are determined based on entries.
