Ron Williams took 1st place in the 50s Men OC-1, and 2nd in the 40s men OC-1, at the 2015 Canadian Outrigger Team Trials at Burnaby Lake on October 11. This means Ron qualified for the Canadian V-6 team in both divisions, and an V1 spot in both divisions, at the World Sprints in Australia in May 2016. For the world competition a racer can qualify and race in their own age group and one age group down.
Ron enjoys competition but what he enjoys most is the road leading up to the competition. Williams finds “It gets a little more difficult to motivate myself to get out onto the water, especially in the winter, but I have a lot of good friends that enjoy paddling as much as I do. We have a talented group of paddlers on Vancouver Island, so I don’t have to travel far for great training or competition.”
Williams paddles a variety of kayaks or canoes but at the moment his favorite ride is his Sea Lion OC-1, “It’s great to paddle a downwinder from Lantzville to Nanaimo when the wind is blowing 20-40 knots north/west. It can be a quite challenging and fun to ride the waves on the windy days”. Anyone that’s interested in learning more about downwind paddling just come out and join us.
