Commodore

Hello Paddlers and Parents of NCKC!

My name is Ashley Rowe and I am the newly appointed Commodore for the Nanaimo Canoe & Kayak Club. As part of the new Board of Directors, I am looking forward to leading the organization with your support and involvement! Our new board is excited and looking forward to creating some diverse paddling opportunities in our community once it is safe to do so.

Our board is guided by the Safe Sport Policies set out by CanoeKayak Canada. We are currently working on creating a membership fee to attract more members, getting the new registration system up and running, designing quality, safe programming, and planning for summer camp leader training and staffing.

Paddling is considered an excellent activity during these times as we are able to maintain safe physical distancing measures. Riley and Craig have been doing a great job maintaining the Spring Youth Sprint Team practices and it was great to see new faces down there at the lake last Friday!

2021-22 NCKC Board of Directors (always recruiting and open to everyone!)

– Commodore – Ashley Rowe (Sprint athlete/coach, Outrigger, Kayak guide & instructor)
– Secretary – Danusch Patrick (Sprint athlete/parent/outrigger & SUP)
– Treasurer – Alea Mills (Sprint athlete/coach, teacher)
– Equipment Manager – Sean Plecas (White Water Slalom Kayak & Rafting)
– Long Lake Flatwater Training Centre Society/Boathouse Rep – Kate Duff (Parent)
– Directors at Large – Cameron Antifave (Sprint Kayak & Surf Ski) & Eduardo Gutierrez Rivas (Sea Kayak Guide)

As the Club is run by volunteers, we encourage parents & athletes to get involved (board or committee member, officiating at regattas, fundraising, communication, athlete rep etc), . Perhaps you have a super power or ability that you’d like to share with our Team? Please let us know how you would like to be involved.

Our next meeting over ZOOM will be on Thursday, May 20th at 7:00pm. We invite you to join us online to learn a little more about what it is we have planned for 2021-22 and to provide some updates on what we have completed to date. Please let me know if you are interested and I will send you the meeting link.

Another date of interest is a work party at the lake with masks and physical distancing practices in place to clean the cage, wash boats, organize the boathouse etc. this SUNDAY, May 16th at 10am. Feel free to come out to assist with NCKC’s Spring Clean!

I am looking forward to meeting you soon.

Yours in Paddling,

Ashley Rowe
