NCKC’s Ashley Rowe was among 12 people honoured for their contribution to Nanaimo sports development at this year’s Community Sport Hero Awards; a fitting way to start Thanksgiving weekend.

Ashley, NCKC’s former head coach, was recognized for her longtime commitment to developing the sport of Canoe Kayak in Nanaimo. Over the years, her passion for paddling has inspired countless people of all ages to get out on the water, have fun and succeed. As a coach, she’s led high performance sprint paddlers and adventure racers to achieve their personal bests locally, nationally and internationally and her leadership has been instrumental in developing the club as it is today.

Founded in 2001, the Community Sport Hero Awards are an initiative of Sport BC that aims to recognize the leadership of BC’s sport volunteers and their essential contribution to the delivery of sport programs in BC. Other 2014 award recipients were: Sean Roden (football), Darrell Dudley (sailing), Rob and Kim Williamson (triathlon), April Plasteras (soccer), Doug and Jennifer Cawthorne (softball), Deborah Provencher (synchronized swimming) and Ian Thorpe (multi-sports).
